We started off our journey from Kolkata and we reached Rishikesh via Delhi. From Delhi we landed at Dehradun and from there we finally reached Rishikesh in two hours or so if we could remember correctly.
Note : You can directly reach Rishikesh from Kolkata via flight and train, we did not do it as we had to explore Dehradun as well.
June was one of the hottest month in India and not an ideal weather to do river rafting, but the adrenaline rush made us to go for it considering the fact that crowd will be lighter.
We did some research on the operators which we wanted to hire to do the sport, so upon landing it was not so difficult for us to spot them. We told them that as it was our first time so we want to go for the beginner course with around 8 rapids to cover.
River rafting in Rishikesh Tips : Do not consider an intermediate or pro course if this is your first time. It is very tough. There were more than 100 govt & private tour operators which we have sighted, so do check the most authentic one before booking them.
Our operator charged us around 2.5k in total (Brahampuri to Laxman Jhula around 8kms) which included safety guards, raft and two guides. If you have to film it, the charges are extra which we did not opt for.
Finally after paying the advance ,we wore our outfits and were ready to rumble. The water was freezing cold when we tried to touch it, but it was the best thing in the scorching heat.As we started off, the guide told us about few basic instructions like when to stop, when to row, how to sit on the raft etc.
River rafting in Rishikesh Tip – Do listen to the instructions carefully
All our mobile, wallet were kept inside a waterproof bag inside the raft only. As soon as the first rapid came, we got so scared initially that we shouted like anything lol, but that was the fun after all. With the raft hitting the rapid waters, the water just rose to a level and crashed upon us like a snake which has build up its hood to bite someone. What we also heard is that every rapid has a name of their own, which was interesting….
Slowly as we moved on, the breathtaking view of the mountains, the deep blue water, the other rafts passing by & the sun shining right down at the water making it sparkle was one of the best views of nature that we could have expected. We saw few joints for having some refreshments & maggie but we did not stop for it.
As we reached the middle of the course, the guide stopped the raft, we all went out of the boat and immersed ourselves in the water. We were all floating with our life jackets on and holding our boat tightly. The chilled water running across, with nothing to step foot on was so refreshing that after a tiring ride it felt like the best thing on the planet.
If you manage to successfully man oeuvre through the stretch with little help from the guide, you positively deserve a pat on your back for your skirmishing spirit.
River rafting in Rishikesh Tips : Tell the guide to pause the raft atleast once before hitting the shore
With the other rapids almost over we slowly came to the shore. We offered our shoulder to help the guides to carry the raft to their shop as they were also tired like us.
Note : the main movement of the boat and controls are managed by the driver who sits at the back, so you can say it’s pretty safe.
The river rafting was something that we wanted to do for a long time. We were lucky enough to do this, as we have heard that after a major accident, the river rafting in Rishikesh have stopped for quite some time.If your planning to do river rafting, do your research thoroughly, like at which place you want to do it, who is the operator, what are the safety measures etc. Rishikesh is by far the best place in India for river rafting because of the rugged terrain and the perfect rapids.
River rafting in RishikeshTip : After the river rafting, don’t forget to have your delicious meal in the famous Chotiwala restaurant, if you are doing it in Rishikesh.
